As student social workers, we should at all time uphold best practices, a high level of professionalism and maintain our professional code of ethics at all times. SASSWA aims to assist students in resolving issues faced in the best possible ways. We can provide guidance and oversight during the steps that need to be taken. Should the issue remain unresolved after following the guidelines we may step in as SASSWA to assist. Below are general guidelines one could follow, however, keep in mind your university might have slightly different steps to follow.
Your first step of recourse is to address the issue with the lecture themselves. This must be done in writing and be very respectful in your approach. Substantiate the issue with facts, names and if possible dates. Raise the issue in detail so the lecture has a clear understanding of the issue.
Should the issue not be able to be resolved with the person directly (step 1), you may now address the issue with the Head of Department. It is always best practice to do so in writing via email.
Failure to resolve the issue with the Head of Department, you can now escalate the issue to the Dean. Provide all correspondence from the previous steps to the Dean.
Each university should have an Ombudsman or Student Affairs office. The Ombudsman is an independent person appointed by the University Council whose sole duty is to investigate allegations made by someone who has been harmed as a result of actions allegedly committed by the University or a member of its staff. Please read the requirements of your respective university before taking this step.
